Use cases
- Cutting through-hole and blind-hole threads in repair and assembly work
- Starting a square thread with the taper tap before running the plug tap
- Finishing threads to the bottom of a blind hole with the bottoming tap
- On-site threading without a tapping machine, used with a tap wrench
- Re-cutting damaged existing threads back to usable condition
Compatibility
Use with a tap wrench sized to the tap shank. Always drill the correct tap-drill size first (slightly smaller than the tap diameter) per the tap-drill chart, and use cutting oil to clear heat. Turn 4 turns forward, back off 4 turns to break the chip, and repeat.

FAQ
Which tap in the 3-piece set do I use first?
Always start with the taper tap (8–10 thread lead) because it helps the tap enter square and start easily. Then use the plug tap to run the thread deeper. For through holes those two are enough; for a blind hole, finish with the bottoming tap to cut threads all the way to the bottom.
What drill size do I use before tapping?
The hole must be slightly smaller than the tap so there is material to cut the thread. A simple rule is: tap-drill size = tap diameter − pitch (e.g. M6 × 1.0 mm pitch needs a 5.0 mm hole). Refer to a tap-drill chart for exact sizes.
Can an HSS hand tap cut stainless steel?
Yes for low volumes, but stainless is tough and builds heat, so use a stainless-grade tapping oil, turn slowly, and back off frequently to break chips. For high-volume stainless work, a machine tap in a stainless grade will last longer.
